CUSBC & CURA 2022
Heslop ✓ Bentata ✓ Kensington ✓ Humphry ✓ Chancellors’ ✓ …HM The Queen’s Prize?! ✓ It has been a phenomenal year for CUSBC and CURA. Following a dynamic match programme involving many inaugural fixtures, CUSBC retained all smallbore varsity trophies, providing excellent cause for celebration at the first CURA Dinner since 2020. CURA built on this success with victories in the Humphry and Chancellors’ matches, yet ultimately it was individual successes which really crowned Cambridge’s participation in the 2022 Imperial Meeting. HM The Queen’s Prize 2022 was won by a current CURA member and the 2021-2022 CURA Captain, Alice Good GM, who has the most hearty congratulations of both CUSBC and CURA on this phenomenal achievement. While it is not the first time that a current CURA member has won the competition, Alice is only the third ever woman to win the Queen’s Prize and her achievement is truly a landmark. We also would like to congratulate Alice on her selection for the GB U25 TR squad for the South Africa Tour 2024, and Katherine Fleck for her first cap in the National Match for England, another excellent achievement! With these achievements for our teams and our individual members, both CUSBC and CURA entered the 2022-2023 academic year with high hopes for another successful season. Michaelmas saw CUSBC kicking off the new academic year with over 100 new members, including experienced shots but a vast majority who were complete novices. Victories in matches against Uppingham School and our alumni/friends leave us unbeaten so far in the season, an achievement we hope to retain throughout next term and beyond. The first CUSBC Open matches saw some extremely impressive performances, especially from the winner Patrick Connolly with a 194 in the finals, who only first picked up a rifle in October! All of the hard training was complemented by a lively social calendar, with particular highlights being the annual invite to OURC dinner, for which we are ever grateful, as well as the CUSBC Christmas dinner in the Hawk’s Club. A massive thank you, as always, to everyone who has helped and coached us - it is fundamental to our excellence at the top level and our ability to develop talent. In this regard, it is notable that in addition to Patrick, our novices have enjoyed much success this year: Luca Schwarz won the postal rounds of Novice BUCS 2021-2022, and Chris Denham achieved a Half Blue in the Chancellors' Match. Above all, we are most proud of Alice being a homegrown CUSBC and CURA talent, going from being a novice in her first year to winning the Queen’s Prize this year. We hope to continue to develop our talent in the future as successfully as in recent years. Things are shaping up to be very exciting in 2023, as we look forward next term to more fixtures, BUCS, and the Varsity matches! Stay safe and see you all in 2023, GDBO, CUSBC & CURA

Congratulations to all of our shooters over the last two weekends who had terrific varsity matches, retaining all three cups! The Heslop (1st VIII) was won with a score of 1525 to Oxfords 1498 and Bentata (ladies’ IV) with 753 to 718. Congratulations to Fergus for top scoring; to Fergus, Barty, and Katherine for achieving full blue scores; to James, Amy, and Barty for their first CUSBC half blues; and to Kristina for being awarded Club Colours. Well done to Al Clark too for wining the unofficial reserve shoot, 188 to 180. Profound thanks are given to the CUSBC adjutants, Dom and Al, for their diligence in checking equipment, for maintaining a jovial, avuncular manner to reassure nervous firers, and for deeply confusing Oxford by arriving in one of their half-blue blazers. Many thanks also go to Mr Kevin Pilcher of the Perse School, for his generous provision of the range, and to the Perse School catering for the marvellous spread laid on for the teams. We were back again at the Perse the following week for the Kensington (2nd VIII), where we scored another resounding victory of 1479 to Oxford's 1434. A particular congratulations to Duncan for his impressive score of 191, which would have been a half-blue score in a 1st team match, and thank you to Dom for captaining the team. The inter-collegiate ‘Cuppers’ tournament was also contested concurrently, with Alice and Duncan of Emmanuel College winning with a score of 382 ex. 400, with the runners-up Pembroke and Churchill 3 and 12 points behind respectively. Congratulations again to everyone who shot, and a huge thank you to Oxford for the competition and for travelling all the way here! Until the next time, GDBO
